We’re definitely heading into a confusing tax season.
Last year, Congress changed rules — in the middle of tax season — to make the first $10,200.00 of unemployment compensation tax free. This caused numerous problems. Returns that were already filed with balances owed became refunds. The IRS claimed they would take care of this “on their end”. This took until August of 2021 to sort out. Some are still not sorted out.
